Is Montana Becoming a Sanctuary State?

In Recent News by AlforMontana

On March 25, 2020, while Montanans were dealing with shelter-in-place directives, Montana moved closer to becoming a sanctuary state.

The Montana Supreme Court ruled unanimously, 7 – 0, that state and local law enforcement officers in Montana do not have the authority to arrest people on federal civil immigration detainers.

While our County Health Departments can order quarantine or isolate-in-place for law abiding citizens, illegal immigrants who committed a crime are being protected from the consequences of breaking our laws.

As your next Governor, I will investigate this issue, direct Montana law enforcement officers to cooperate with federal immigration authorities, and work with the legislature to fix problems in the current laws that caused the court to rule as it did.
