KALISPELL – Dr. Al Olszewski, candidate for Montana Governor, was honored with the Flathead’s Best Orthopedist Award for the second consecutive year. Sponsored by the Daily Inter Lake, the ‘Best of Flathead’ competition is a highly anticipated, people’s choice contest. Thousands of participants vote for their favorite service providers, businesses, and restaurants in this annual competition.

Olszewski began his practice in Kalispell as a partner at Flathead Valley Orthopedics in 1998. He was the first fellowship-trained sports medicine orthopedic surgeon to provide care in Kalispell.

During his career, Olszewski was a pioneer in the development of minimally invasive joint replacement surgery. He is an international instructor and trained more than one thousand surgeons across North and South America in the execution of minimally invasive total knee replacements. In 2007, Olszewski performed the first minimally invasive total knee replacement in South America in Sal Paulo, Brazil.

Prior to practicing as a physician in Montana, Olszewski served in the United States Air Force for 13 years as a flight surgeon and rapid mobility trauma surgeon. He completed specialized training to mobilize from an aircraft with medical equipment in a backpack and setup sterile bases to perform emergency operations. Olszewski received the Air Force Commendation medal for being a rapid response medical provider during the Oklahoma City Bombing in 1995.

Olszewski volunteered in the early medical response to the devastating 2010 Haiti Earthquake as a trauma surgeon. He was one of the first outside medical personnel on the ground after the natural disaster and provided orthopedic care to the children of Port Au Prince.

Since 2014, Olszewski has served as a state legislator to advocate for patients in healthcare policy. He was first elected to the Montana House of Representatives in 2014, and currently serves as the Montana Senator for District 6. Olszewski is running as a Republican candidate for governor in the June 2020 primary election.

Olszewski has been married to his wife, Nancee Olszewski, for 32 years. They have six children and one grandchild.
