Meet Dr. Al

Dr. Al Olszewski, a dedicated orthopedic surgeon, veteran, and lifelong Montanan, is running for U.S. Congress in Montana’s 1st District. With a track record of principled leadership and a commitment to putting Montana first, Dr. Al is ready to take on Washington’s elite and deliver real results for hardworking families across the Treasure State. As a non-establishment conservative who can’t be bought, he stands firm on the values that make Montana great: freedom, self-reliance, and opportunity for all.

Dr. Al and his wife, Nancee, have been married for 39 years, have lived in the Flathead Valley for nearly three decades, and are proud parents and grandparents.

Born and raised in Great Falls, Montana, Dr. Al graduated from C.M. Russell High School before earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Carroll College in 1984. He went on to obtain his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Washington School of Medicine in 1988, and completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine and Adult Reconstruction at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio in 1998.

Dr. Al’s commitment to service led him to join the U.S. Air Force, where he served for 13 years as a flight and rapid mobility trauma surgeon. Rising to the rank of Major, he completed specialized training to perform emergency surgery on the battlefield, placing him among an elite group of military physicians prepared to operate and save lives in the most demanding crisis environments. He received Air Force Commendation medals for being a rapid response medical provider during the Oklahoma City Bombing in 1995 and the Manta Ecuador Air Disaster in 1996.

After his honorable service, Dr. Al returned to Montana to raise his family and build a successful career as an orthopedic surgeon. He has lived in the Flathead Valley with his wife, Nancee, and their family since 1998, where he founded Flathead Orthopedics. Over his career, he has cared for over 100,000 patients and was an innovator in the development of minimally invasive joint replacement surgery, performing the first minimally invasive total knee replacement in South America. He also served as an Early Response Trauma Surgeon during the 2010 Haiti earthquake disaster relief effort.

Dr. Al entered politics to extend his service beyond the operating room. Elected to the Montana House of Representatives in 2014 (District 11), he quickly proved himself as a conservative champion, winning with overwhelming support. In 2016, he was elected to the Montana State Senate (District 6), serving until 2021. During his tenure, he sponsored key legislation to protect life, support veterans, expand access to public lands, and cut wasteful spending. As Vice Chair of the Children, Families, Health, and Human Services Interim Committee, he led efforts to improve healthcare delivery, regulate pharmacy benefits, and advance pro-life measures like the Montana Born-Alive Infant Protection Act. He also served on key committees, including the Senate Rules Committee, Senate Finance and Claims, and the House Taxation Committee, championing conservative fiscal policies and fighting for Montana families.

No stranger to tough races, Dr. Al has consistently challenged the status quo. In 2018, he ran for U.S. Senate, earning strong grassroots support. In 2020, he campaigned for Governor against Greg Gianforte, focusing on ethical government and Montana’s unique needs. Most recently, in 2022, he nearly unseated Ryan Zinke in the Republican primary for this very seat, falling short by fewer than 2,000 votes – proving his appeal to voters tired of Washington insiders. Now, with the seat open, Dr. Al is stepping up again to represent Western Montana in Congress.
